Kahuku setter Penina Snuka is one of the best at spreading the ball around to different teammates.

But when things get tough, Snuka knows exactly who her go-to-girl is.

Junior Adora Anae had eight of her game-high 13 kills in the third and only competitive set of the match as the No. 2-seeded Red Raiders overwhelmed Pearl City 25-11, 25-12, 25-17 in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball Division I State Championships on Wednesday night at Kaimuki.

Snuka finished with 29 assists, seven digs and five kills to lead Kahuku (15-1) into the semifinals tonight against Kamehameha (15-3) at 7 at McKinley.

"I think we did good the first two sets but that third set was kind of dragging," Kahuku coach Camilla Ah Hoy said. "I think the girls got too comfortable."

The Chargers (9-6) never led in the match until the third set when a kill by Johnai Kapua gave Pearl City an 8-7 advantage.

Anae took over at that point, putting down six kills the rest of the match, including two during a 5-0 run that pushed a two-point lead to 22-15, ending any chance of a fourth set.

"(Adora) is one of the biggest impacts on this team," Snuka said. "If I have one go-to player, it’s her because I can always count on her to put the ball away."

Pati Anae added eight kills and two blocks for Kahuku, which is the last OIA team to win the state title.

Kahuku won it all in 2002 before Punahou and Kamehameha combined to win the past nine.

The Warriors won the Division I state championship six years in a row before falling to Punahou in 2011.

"We’re excited to play them," Snuka said. "We played them in the preseason and they looked great so it’ll be a great opportunity to play against them."

Although Kahuku only needed an hour to dispatch Pearl City in three sets, Ah Hoy wasn’t happy with the team’s 14 service errors.

"A lot of (Pearl City’s) points came from hitting errors and putting the ball into the net on our serves," Ah Hoy said. "Just limiting our errors is something we need to do better."

Kahuku dominated the first two sets, holding Pearl City to just two total kills.

The Red Raiders led 15-5 in the second set before slowly rotating in their second-string to finish out the match.

Ah Hoy put the regulars back in to start Set 3, but they were slow to adjust as Pearl City led five different times before Kahuku finally found its rhythm following a timeout.

"I think trying to get all of the girls in did kill our momentum," Ah Hoy said. "I wanted to do that because the three days back-to-back with the traveling kind of takes its toll."

Senior libero Ashley Mataele had a team-high eight digs for Kahuku while Kacie Chinen had 10 digs and a kill to lead the Chargers.

Five-foot-10 senior Kaya Chong had nine digs for Pearl City but was held to only two kills.

Kamehameha 3, Kamehameha-Maui 0

Junior Pikake Laumauna hit .800 with 12 kills in 15 attempts and senior outside Pomai Recca added 11 kills as the Warriors defeated Kamehameha-Maui 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 to advance to the semifinals.

Laumauna put all eight of her attempts down for kills in the third set as neither she nor Recca committed an error in the entire match.

Junior Faith Ma‘afala added 25 assists and Kalehua Katagiri had 15 digs for Kamehameha (15-3).

Senior Bobbi Lin Kalama had 18 assists, nine digs and two aces and Taylor Awai had a team-high 14 digs for Kamehameha-Maui (14-1), which will play Pearl City tonight at 7 at Kaimuki in a consolation game.
