Lots of 808 in NCAA soccer tournament
Seven teams represented by players from Hawaii are in the 64-team field that makes up the 2014 NCAA Championships in women’s soccer.
Leading the way is No. 1 seed and defending champion UCLA, which is on a 41-game unbeaten streak.
Senior defender Caprice Dydasco (Kamehameha ’11) has started all 20 games this year for the Bruins (18-0-2) and is fourth on the team in minutes played (1,561). Dydasco has two goals and seven assists, but more important, has played a big part in the Bruins allowing only four goals. UCLA has gone 668 consecutive game minutes since allowing its last goal — on Oct. 9 against Stanford.
The Bruins will host San Diego (10-7-2) in a first-round game on Friday. Freshman Emily Evans (Hawaii Prep ’13) has appeared in four games for the Toreros.
Washington (12-6-2) earned a four seed in the tournament and hosts Rider University on Friday. Freshman midfielder Shaye Villanueva (‘Iolani ’14) has appeared in nine games for the Huskies and attempted four shots.
Also receiving a four seed is Pepperdine (15-2-3), which hosts Southern California on Saturday.
Senior midfielder Ally Holtz (Punahou ’11) was named to the All-West Coast Conference first team on Tuesday. Holtz is second on the team and tied for fourth in the conference with seven assists and has scored one goal.
Freshman Emily Tanaka (‘Iolani ’14) hasn’t played this year for the Waves.
Georgia (10-7-2) will make its ninth appearance in the tournament and opens at Central Florida on Saturday. Sophomore defender Summer Burnett (Kamehameha ’13) started the first six matches of the year for the Bulldogs before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
A game against Central Florida on Sept. 7 was delayed due to rain. Before the game resumed, Burnett tore her ACL while warming up on the wet field.
Harvard (10-4-2), which won the Ivy League, hosts Central Connecticut State in the first round on Saturday.
Freshman Dani Stollar (Punahou ’14) has started 12 of the 16 games she’s played and has scored three goals for the Crimson.
Northeastern (14-4-3) is in the tournament again after winning its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship. The Huskies will host Boston University in the first round on Saturday.
Senior striker Lahaina Zoller (Punahou ’11) has started all 21 games and has three goals and three assists. Freshman Bo Samson (Sacred Hearts ’14) has appeared in three games for the Huskies.
