GM fixing museum’s marred Vettes

WARREN, Mich. » General Motors Co. says it’s been restoring some prized Chevrolet Corvettes extracted from a sinkhole at a Kentucky museum.

GM has received two classic vehicles that were among eight gobbled up by a 60-foot-deep hole in February at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. Among them is the 1 millionth Corvette, a 1992 model, which had significant damage.

The Detroit-based automaker invited the media Wednesday to see the vehicle before restoration begins next month at its Design Center Fabrication Operations in suburban Warren. The work is expected to take six months.

A 2009 ZR 1 was restored and returned to the museum. A 1962 model is expected to be worked on at a specialty shop.

Ghetto lives in interactive display

ROME » Visitors to Rome’s Jewish Museum can now "walk" streets as they were before the Ghetto neighborhood’s demolition in the 1880s.

Tucked behind Rome’s main synagogue, the museum Thursday evening unveiled an interactive table that enables people, with hand movements, to simulate strolling the Old Ghetto.

Researchers studied watercolor landscapes from the times, city property records and photographs taken before the district was demolished during Rome’s makeover to be modern Italy’s capital.

The neighborhood is home to one of the world’s longest continuously inhabited Jewish communities. Sixteenth-century Pope Paul IV ordered Jews confined there; papal edicts enforced the Ghetto’s duration until the mid-18th century.

Many streets today look remarkably unchanged, but the interactive table shows how the Tiber lapped up against Ghetto buildings before river embankment construction.

Time to ski in Land of Enchantment

SANTA FE, N.M. » Ski Santa Fe was set to open for the season Saturday with limited runs on a mix of man-made and natural snow.

No snow had fallen there for at least the past week, but some snow was expected before the weekend. The ski area says its snow-making crews would be busy in the meantime.

The Midland, Easy Street and Pine Flats Beginners Area have a 20-inch snow base and were to open this weekend. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
