Police have charged one of two men suspected of robbing a 50-year-old woman in Kalihi on Friday.

According to police, Stanley Tugaoen, 31, of Kalihi, and another unidentified man took the woman’s property and brandished a dangerous weapon when the woman struggled with them.

Both men fled, but Tugaoen was later located near Kama Lane and arrested.

Tugaoen was charged Saturday with first-degree robbery. His bail was set at $30,000.

Police have charged a 67-year-old Kalihi man in connection with the robbery of a Kalihi bank on Thursday.

John Rocky Kikuyama turned himself in at the Kalihi police station on Thursday evening.

He was charged Saturday with second-degree robbery. His bail was set at $30,000.

Grant funds physics study

Hawaii’s congressional delegation has announced a new $1.5 million grant for physics research at the University of Hawaii.

The money will go to high-energy physics research. The delegation said in a news release Thursday that $8.9 million eventually will be invested.

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz says particle physics research is what led to the discovery of the electron more than 100 years ago.

U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard says the money will enable UH to continue to lead in the field of high-energy physics. That field examines properties of matter and understanding of the physical universe.
