Lemongrass Cafe is the venue for kim chee class and dinner
Popular cooking instructor Walter Rhee will do double duty at Pacific Gateway Center’s Lemongrass Cafe with a Thursday class and Friday pop-up dinner.
It’s all things kim chee Thursday from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m., when Rhee will demonstrate making kim chee from scratch and prepare fried kim chee, kim chee mandoo, kim chee noodles, kim chee pancakes and kim chee stir-fry with pork and tofu.
Fee is $80 and enrollment is limited.
Rhee will prepare a six-course Korean-Chinese meal for a 6 p.m. Friday seating. The menu includes Boo-choo (pork-chive dumplings), Chajangmyun (pork black bean sauce noodles), Champong (spicy seafood noodles), Lahjohgi (hot spicy chicken), Sogogi Tang Soo Yook (sweet and sour beef) and Gogooma Tang (candied sweet potato).
Cost is $30 and reservations are required.

Maryknoll School’s luau to include games, auction
Join the Maryknoll School community at its 37th annual luau, noon to 6 p.m. Saturdayat the school’s grade-school campus, 1526 Alexander St.
The dine-in option will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., with takeout available from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The luau will also include games, a country store and a silent auction.
Parking will be available for $5 at the First Church Christ Scientist and Lutheran Church of Honolulu at 1508 Punahou St., and valet parking will be available at Maryknoll High School for $8.

Food and treats will highlight this year’s Taste of Waipahu
Head toward the landmark Oahu Sugar Mill smokestack to get to the seventh annual Taste of Waipahu, 3:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday on Waipahu Depot Street and at the Waipahu Festival Marketplace.
Food vendors include Laverne’s Catering, Kona Ice, Thai Kitchen, Ono Kettle Corn and Ono Local Grindz.

Annual Puna Culinary Festival features cooking competition
The second annual Puna Culinary Festival at the Kalani Oceanside Retreat on Hawaii island kicks off at 8 p.m. Saturday with a competition similar to "Iron Chef" between Scott Laaback of Evening Rain Farm and Red Road personal chef Barrie Saccomanno.
The festival runs through Nov. 11 featuring farm tours, a Taste of Pahoa event on Nov. 9, a behind-the-scenes luau hosted by Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah Nov. 10, and cooking classes ranging from desserts prepared by chef-author Mark Ceranski to gluten-free cooking with Maui-trained Hilary Barsby.
