Earthquake rattles nerves in Napa Valley

NAPA, Calif. >> A magnitude-4.1 earthquake has jolted Napa Valley and became an unwelcome reminder of the wine country’s large temblor last summer — the strongest quake to hit Northern California in a quarter-century.

This time, no one was injured and damage was limited to broken items that fell from shelves.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake struck at 7:53 p.m. Thursday about 9 miles north of Napa. The agency says shaking was widely felt in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento.

In August, a magnitude-6.0 quake struck Napa, killing one person and injuring hundreds. It caused millions of dollars in damage to the historic downtowns of Napa and Vallejo and $80 million in damage to Napa Valley’s wine industry, much of it from shattered bottles and toppled barrels.
