Collapse of wall kills construction worker
A construction worker was fatally injured Monday at Schofield Barracks when a cinder-block wall collapsed at a construction site, the Army said.
Officials received a 911 call at 1:34 p.m. of an injury at a construction site near Foote Avenue and Heard Street, where contracting firm Nan Inc. is renovating Quad D.
City emergency medical personnel responded to the 911 call and took the man to Wahiawa General Hospital. The worker, described as a man in his 20s, died at 2:13 p.m. at the hospital, U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii said in a news release.
Driver who died in Waialua crash is ID’d
The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who died in a head-on collision in Waialua as Joseph Matuga, 61, of Waialua.
Matuga was driving a Volkswagen Beetle when he crossed the centerline and his car split in half upon colliding with two oncoming vehicles.
The Volkswagen, traveling on Kamehameha Highway near a Waialua coffee field on the Haleiwa side of Dole Plantation, first hit a compact Chevrolet sedan heading in the opposite direction, occupied by two men from Switzerland, ages 21 and 22.
Part of the Volkswagen then struck a Dodge van behind the Chevrolet occupied by a couple from Tokyo. The man is 32 and the woman is 27.
Matuga died at the scene. His identity was confirmed through fingerprints. Toxicology results are pending.
In 2009, Matuga was convicted of driving while highly intoxicated.
The four visitors were taken by ambulance in serious condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
Accident victim was Washington woman
The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the 61-year-old visitor who died last week after she was struck while crossing a street in Waikele as Sutsuki Armga from Washington state.
Police said Armga was in a marked crosswalk at Lumiaina Street near the Waikele Shopping Center when she was hit by a Hummer driven by a 40-year-old Waipahu woman.
