Former Hawaii resident Camren Bicondova, who danced for the popular 8 Flavahz dance crew, is clawing her way to success in Hollywood.
She’ll have a prominent role in "Gotham," the Fox TV show that portrays the characters and city of comic-book fame in its pre-Batman era. Bicondova, 14, will play a young Selina Kyle, an orphan and a cat burglar who as an adult becomes Catwoman.
The show, scheduled to debut in the fall, also will depict the adventures of a young detective, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), later the police commissioner; Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) as a teenager who witnesses his parents’ murder; and other characters such as Edward Nygma — E. Nygma, get it? —who later becomes The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), and Alfred the butler (Sean Pertwee).
Camren danced for 8 Flavahz during the group’s remarkable run to a second-place finish in MTV’s "America’s Best Dance Crew" competition in 2012. The all-girl group drew attention not only for its snappy hip-hop routines, but because it was the youngest group ever to compete, with members age 10 to 17. 8 Flavahz was coached by choreographers Marcelo Pacleb and Kelsey Park of the 24-VII Danceforce studio in Kaneohe.
The team also had to deal with separation anxiety of a sort: Some members lived in Hawaii while others lived in Los Angeles. Camren grew up in Hawaii but relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her career in show business.
She had a big-screen role in the 2012 hip-hop dance movie "Battlefield America."
