A 21-year-old woman died Sunday night at Maui Memorial Medical Center after she was hit while walking on the dirt shoulder of a road in Kahului.

Devon King and a 19-year-old woman were both struck at 6:52 p.m. by a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by at 19-year-old Kahului woman. The Ford was traveling east on Vevau Street and left the road, striking the two women who were walking on the dirt shoulder. Both women were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. King died at 9:33 p.m.

Speed and alcohol are suspected.

This is Maui’s 20th traffic death, compared to 16 at the same time last year.
