Hawaii basketball coach Gib Arnold offered confirmation on two fronts Wednesday.
In a UH press release, he first recognized the official signing of Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College guard Roderick Bobbitt on the first day of the spring signing period.
At the same time, Arnold acknowledged the early departure of starting point guard Keith Shamburger, who is on track to graduate this summer and may join another Division I team in the fall.
Bobbitt, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, became UH’s second signed player for 2014-15, joining fall commit Isaac Fleming. He has two seasons of eligibility.
Bobbitt averaged 15.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists while being partly responsible for ballhandling duties for the NJCAA national runner-up. He was a teammate of Brandon Spearman’s at Indian Hills in the 2011-12 season.
"We are thrilled to have Roderick join our team," Arnold said in a statement. "He was the best player on the best junior college team in the country and is a true leader and winner. He’s (a) big guard who can play multiple positions, but what I like most about him is he’s a lock-down defender and player who at the end of games always had the ball in his hands to make the right play."
Shamburger was UH’s starter at the point in 30 of its 31 games. He averaged 9.3 points and a Big West-leading 5.4 assists to help the team to a 20-11 record after redshirting the 2012-13 season as a transfer from San Jose State.
"Keith informed me of his decision to transfer and finish his playing career closer to home (Los Angeles)," Arnold said. "I am grateful for all that Keith has done to help build this program. He was a big part of our 20-win season and we all wish him continued success."
He is the third starter UH will have to replace, along with outgoing seniors Spearman and Christian Standhardinger.
With Shamburger’s departure, UH is believed to have three scholarships available to award to new players or returning walk-ons for next season. Acquisition of another big man is considered a top priority.
