Tsunami ambles ashore

A sign on the Ward Avenue overpass alerted drivers to the emergency. The tsunami warning was issued at 7:15 p.m. and was still active as of midnight.

At left, Waialua residents Kara Donovan, Jane Au, Kona Au, Kawika Au and Julie Au enjoyed a light moment around 10 p.m. while they waited for the roadblock at Kaukonahua Road and Wilikina Drive to be cleared. Police had closed Kaukonahua to northbound traffic following the tsunami warning.

The warning prompted residents to head to gas stations to fill their tanks. The Chevron at the corner of Keeaumoku and Beretania streets was packed with motorists waiting to top off.

Police closed Kaukonahua Road to northbound traffic Saturday night after the tsunami alert was issued. Waialua residents Richielyn Respicio, in car, and Eddie Nocom, standing, waited at a roadblock at the intersection of Kaukonahua and Wilikina Drive.
