The Hawaii basketball team will host perennial powerhouse North Carolina at the Stan Sheriff Center on Nov. 16, 2016, in a prelude to UNC’s participation in the Maui Invitational.

"This is a tremendous opportunity and honor to compete with one of the premier programs in all of college basketball," head coach Eran Ganot said in a UH release. "Can’t say enough about the efforts of so many to make this happen as its not too often you can schedule an opponent of this caliber on your homecourt. We are thrilled to be able to bring North Carolina and their terrific, Hall of Fame Coach, Roy Williams, to the Stan Sheriff Center in front of our wonderful fans!"

UH is 0-4 all-time against the Tar Heels, including 0-3 at home. The last meeting came on Dec. 22, 1994, an 88-76 loss to top-ranked UNC in the opening season of the Sheriff Center.

In recent years, the Rainbows have played a handful of power-conference teams prior to those teams’ participation in the Maui Invitational. Most recently, UH defeated Pittsburgh 74-70 at Maui’s War Memorial Gym last season.

The last such team UH hosted at the Stan Sheriff Center was Illinois in 2012. The Fighting Illini won 78-77 in overtime and went on to win the Maui tournament.

The Tar Heels went 26-12 last season, including 11-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
