The city has issued 10,922 firecracker permits for New Year’s Eve 2013, some 2,300 more than last year.

Friday was the last day for Oahu residents to purchase the $25 permits that allow people to buy firecrackers.

Under the city’s fireworks ordinance, permits are required to purchase firecrackers from licensed retailers.

One permit allows for the purchase of up to 5,000 non-aerial individual firecracker units between 12:01 a.m. Thursday and midnight Dec. 31.

The city issued 8,564 permits in 2012, 8,656 in 2011, 10,008 in 2010 and 8,050 in 2009.

Firecrackers can only be set off on Oahu from 9 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.

No one under age 18 may set off firecrackers, even with adult supervision.

On Kauai, $25 firecracker applications are still available at the Kauai Fire Department headquarters in the Piikoi building of the Lihue Civic Center weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Unlike Honolulu, which stops sale of firecracker permits 10 days before the permitted holiday, Kauai permits will be available until Dec. 31, officials said.

Fireworks on Kauai may be ignited only on private property from 9 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.
