‘Iolani is not going to beat itself up over mistakes any more. It prefers to punish opponents when things don’t go right.
The Raiders made errors on Punahou’s first two batters, but played flawless after that to beat host Punahou 7-1 on Wednesday.
Katelyn Chagami and Sara Buck reached on errors for Punahou in the top of the first, but left the bases loaded when ‘Iolani pitcher Taylor Garcia-Perreira forced Krystin Wong to fly out in foul ground to third and Paige Kawai to bounce back to the circle. Punahou didn’t have another opportunity as good as that one the rest of the way.
"We feel that was the key in this game actually," ‘Iolani assistant coach Lois Manin said. "In the past we haven’t fought through those early errors and today we fought through it and bounced right back and get out of it. I think if we don’t get out of that, it changes things mentally for us."
The Raiders brought out the bats in the second inning, when Garcia-Perreira doubled to the gap in left field and came home on an error by third baseman Heaven Wong off the bat of Vevesi Liilii. They scored again when Kea Gaier dribbled a ball down the line and Wong tried to catch Liilii streaking for home but her throw was late.
Liilii, a sophomore, was treated for an abrasion after the slide, but didn’t let it bother her the next time she came up, doubling to center to lead off the fourth.
"I guess mentally I really wanted to win this since we just lost to Maryknoll," Liilii said. "I just wanted to pick up the energy and momentum on our team."
Cassie Ho drove Liilii home one batter later and Brielle Asato and Spencer Oda each drove in another one to give ‘Iolani a 6-0 lead after four innings.
And that was plenty good enough with Garcia-Perreira in the circle and the defense behind her. The lefty threw only 64 pitches, 40 of them for strikes, in the complete game. Garcia-Perreira let Punahou work a three-ball count only twice and one of them was an intentional pass to Nicole Nishizaki in the first for her only walk.
"If we score in the first inning I think it is a completely different ballgame, but hats off to them, they played terrific defense and made the plays," Punahou coach Bobby Makahilahila said. "The pitcher was tough on us again, like she was the first time."
The Raiders (8-5) moved a game ahead of Punahou
(7-6) into fourth in the ILH with one game left in the regular season. Kamehameha, Maryknoll and Mid-Pacific are tied at the top at 10-3.
‘Iolani closes with winless St. Francis on Tuesday, while Punahou visits Mid-Pacific. Maryknoll plays Pac-Five the same day, and Kamehameha takes on Sacred Hearts.
