Q Knot cable ties
» What they are: Rubbery reusable ties that are meant as all-purpose fasteners but are superb for travel. They are sold in packs of 12 or 25.
» The good: This is a simple and inexpensive product that is invaluable when you’re trying to pack, unpack or simply organize your things for a trip. The fasteners are lightweight, take little space and are brightly colored so they are easy to find — and apparently appetizing: The first instruction on the bag is "Do not eat." Cord organizers for electronics take up precious space in a carry-on or checked bag, but these will let you wind your cords into a bundle to conquer that wire spaghetti in your bag. I also use one to hook my collapsible umbrella to the exterior of my personal bag (man bag) so there’s more room inside. Use them to attach personal items to rings or tabs within your luggage for quick access, say, to a camera. They come in three lengths: 41⁄2, 6 and 7 inches. To test strength, I wrapped a large one around a 20-pound hand weight and lifted. It held.
» The bad: They are a little stiff at the start.
» Cost: $5.99 for 12, $8.99 for 25, plus shipping for online orders
» Available from: Many online suppliers, including amazon.com. For a store, try the Container Store, Crate & Barrel or The Home Depot.
