$100K grant aids Foodbank keiki program
The Hawaii Foodbank has received a $100,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s Hawaii State Giving Council, allowing the food bank to continue weekly and holiday food distributions via backpacks to keiki at risk of hunger.
The program serves close to 90 percent of the students at Princess Kaiulani Elementary School in Honolulu, which is about 365 children of the 411-student population.
"Our staff was facing the reality of cutting food distributions from every Friday to just once a month before Walmart stepped up and provided the funds for us to continue on a weekly basis," Hawaii Foodbank CEO Dick Grimm said.
IN THE NEWS
Hawaii ranks high for multiple job holders
Hawaii ranks in the top third of all states for the number of workers holding down more than one job, according to a report released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
An estimated 6.2 percent of Hawaii workers reported having more than one job in 2012, tying with Kansas for the 13th-highest rate nationally, according to the report. South Dakota topped the list with a multiple job-holding rate of 9.5 percent, while Florida had the lowest rate at 3.4 percent. The national average for workers holding more than one job was 4.9 percent. The U.S. multiple job-holding rate has declined gradually or remained flat each year since peaking at 6.2 percent in 1996.
