Trial set for woman accused of stabbing, setting another woman on fire
A 36-year-old homeless woman entered a plea of not guilty in Circuit Court Thursday to allegedly stabbing a 57-year-old woman and trying to burn her in her Kalihi apartment last month.
Circuit Court Judge Richard Perkins set the trial of Mavourneen Rombawa to begin the week of Aug. 3 before Circuit Court Judge Dean Ochiai.
An Oahu grand jury indicted Rombawa on May 28 for second-degree attempted murder, first-degree arson and kidnapping.
Rombawa has been in custody since her arrest on May 20. Perkins confirmed Rombawa’s bail at $150,000.
Prosecutors said Rombawa entered the apartment of Danita Mendez on May 20 through an unlocked door and asked her if she could take a bath.
When Mendez refused, Rombawa stabbed the woman, prosecutors said.

The suspect allegedly used a wire to tie the woman to a chair, poured vegetable oil over her, the chair and the floor, and set the woman on fire.
A police affidavit said Rombawa told police she started the fire to destroy surveillance cameras, speakers and microphones in the victim’s apartment.
Rombawa also told police that the fire was needed to destroy the “bed bugs, that gotten all over her stuff, on her and in her hair,” according to the affidavit.
Police recovered a seven-inch hunting-type, blood-stained knife.
According to the indictment, prosecutors intend to seek extended sentencing if she is found guilty because she is a persistent offender facing multiple felonies. An extended sentence would boost the penalty for attempted second-degree murder to life in prison, with no opportunity for parole from life with parole if she is convicted.
Rombawa’s criminal record includes a 1998 conviction for burglary and a 2005 conviction for second-degree theft. She also has a 2002 federal conviction for cocaine possession.
