A 29-year-old Kapahulu man pleaded not guilty in the beating death of a 53-year-old man last month in Kalihi.

Moses Henry entered the plea at his Circuit Court arraignment Thursday to a charge of manslaughter in the death of Anthony Corpuz.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins scheduled Corpuz’ trial to begin the week of Aug. 3 before Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario.

An Oahu Grand Jury indicted Henry on May 28 for allegedly recklessly causing the death of Corpuz.

Moses is being held in Oahu Community Correctional Center,  unable to post bail of $50,000.

Witnesses said Corpuz was severely beaten on May 3 after he accused Henry of urinating on a building on Dillingham Boulevard and swore at him. Corpuz, who sustained extensive head injuries, lay in a coma until he died on May 17.

The  medical examiner said the cause of death was craniocerebral injuries due to blunt force trauma to the head.

According to a police affidavit, a witness said Corpuz argued with a group of two women and three men in the parking lot near Club Cleopatra at 1095 Dillingham Blvd at 4:20 a.m.

After Corpuz made a derogatory remark towards the group, Henry ran towards Corpuz and allegedly punched him once in the face.

Police arrested Henry on May 21 on a charge of second-degree murder. The charge was reclassified to manslaughter.
