Some are dazzling. Others are sentimental. And then there’s one that looks and smells good enough to eat, until you take a closer look.

Beauty and some surprises are always found in the annual Holiday Wreath Contest sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts. This year, the 28th edition, is no different.

The theme is "Blue Hawaiian Holidays," and although that is open to interpretation, there are surprisingly few Elvis entries. But there are several others that will get you all shook up.

Following up his memorable rat and cockroach entries from past years, Json N of Mili­lani submitted two out-of-the-box creations, one with goblins in Santa hats and another with ceramic snowflake cookies that are coated with a scented "Happy Birthday" wax, vanilla oil and almond extract to make them appealing to the senses. But when getting closer for a sniff, you may notice an intruder — a large ceramic cockroach recycled from N’s 2012 entry.

For a more heartwarming motif, Kaneohe resident Dawn Taka­mori submitted "Memories of Grandpa from His Workshop," crafted from the beloved family member’s smoking pipe, carpenter’s tools, a mosquito punk and hina­hina from his yard attached to a wreath of painting sticks. The piece paints a picture of a hardworking man.

Seventy-three wreaths were entered in this year’s competition. All will be on display at Lane Gallery at Hono­lulu Hale through Jan. 1.
