HPD: Fireworks-related complaints up, citations down
The number of fireworks-related 911 calls increased on Oahu this New Year’s period but the number of actual citations issued went down.
There were 730 fireworks-related calls made to the city’s 911 emergency line between Dec. 26, 2013 and Jan. 2, 2014, the Honolulu Police Department said. That’s about 23 percent more than the 593 calls logged when Oahu brought in 2013.
The increase in calls bucked a three-year trend. There were 854 complaints in 2011, 1,408 complaints in 2010 and 1,840 complaints in 2009.
Officers issued 62 fireworks-related citations, a 22.5 percent drop from the 80 citations HPD made last year. There were no fireworks-related arrests this year compared to one adult and one juvenile arrested last year.
