The Hawaii football team completed the renovation of its offensive line with a commitment from a junior college guard.
Sullivan "Sully" Wiefels of American River College finished his 48-hour recruiting visit on Sunday and will sign a scholarship agreement with the Rainbow Warriors today.
"This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time," Wiefels said. "Now here it is. It’s time to make it happen."
Several schools expected Wiefels to be a 2014 recruit. But Wiefels was a "predictor" as a high school senior in 2012, meaning he already met the requirements to play NCAA football this season. Wiefels, who joins the Warriors next month, will have four years to play three seasons.
Wiefels is 6 feet 3 and 295 pounds. He will compete at guard. He welcomes working under line coach Chris Naeole, who played in the NFL for 12 years.
"I can’t overlook the fact that I’ll be coached by the guy who perfected my exact position and is arguably one of the best of the best at what I do," Wiefels said. "To be coached by him the next few years is unbelievable."
Wiefels said he finalized his decision to come to Hawaii following discussions with some of the players.
"The players are straight-up dudes," Wiefels said. "They’re not here to walk around and show off that they play football for the University of Hawaii. They’re here to change the program and turn everything around. We think the coaches can get us there."
Wiefels was born in Gilroy, Calif., and spent time in San Jose before moving to Idaho when he was 8. His hobbies are hunting, fishing and cooking.
"My mom told me if you want to eat well, you have to learn to cook well," he said.
His passion is football.
"I know it sounds like a typical response," he said. "But for me, really, I love the game so much it bothers me if I’m not some way getting better at the game."
