A 26-year-old Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate allegedly robbed a 19-year-old man in Makakilo after escaping from the Laumaka Work Furlough Center on Sunday.
Michael Salas, 25, was confined to the center and was finishing a sentence for second-degree robbery. Salas was last seen before a random head count was taken at 1:45 a.m. Sunday. Salas was not authorized to be on any work furlough leave that day, prison officials said.
Police said the robbery occurred at 1:10 a.m. June 1.
Salas was arrested at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in Waianae, police said. He now faces additional charges of escape and robbery, police said.
Autopsy indicates Kona man drowned
A 26-year-old man who died Monday while swimming at the beach near the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii on the Big Island drowned, the medical examiner said.
An autopsy was conducted Tuesday on Richard Demby, of Kailua-Kona.
Demby was reported missing when he failed to return to shore after swimming with another man Monday morning, fire officials reported. Fire rescue personnel found his body that afternoon about 25 yards from shore. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Man, 37, killed by SUV was Lawai resident
A 37-year-old man who died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle in Nawiliwili has been identified as Michael Helppie of Lawai.
Helppie died after he was struck by the SUV near the Kalapaki seawall along Nawiliwili Park about 1:45 a.m. Monday. An autopsy will be performed Thursday.
Police arrested the SUV driver, 34, on suspicion of manslaughter and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released pending investigation.

Police look into indecency case
Maui police have initiated five cases connected to a Police Department employee who callers said was exposing himself in a vehicle in the Pukalani Terrace parking lot and in the Hannibal Tavares Community Center parking lot on Sunday.
Police said the suspect was an employee who is on personal leave.
Police received numerous calls beginning at about 12:51 p.m. regarding a male exposing his genitals and performing a sex act in a vehicle.
Callers described the man as between 40 and 50 years old and about 200 pounds. He was driving a green Toyota 4Runner.
Investigators are pursuing a possible lead provided by at least one of the callers.
Woman found in stream ID’d
Hawaii island police identified the woman found partially submerged in Umauma Stream in Hilo on Monday as Bobbie Jackie Carnathan of Kailua-Kona.
Carnathan, 62, was identified through fingerprints. Her body was discovered in the stream on Monday at about 11:30 a.m. She had been reported missing on Saturday.
An autopsy determined that she died from traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from a height.
Police do not suspect foul play but continue to investigate the death, which is classified as a coroner’s inquest.
