University of California board approves tuition hike for non-residents
SAN FRANCISCO >> Members of the University of California’s governing board have approved an 8 percent increase in the tuition premium that students from outside the state and abroad pay to attend.
The tuition hike endorsed by a Board of Regents committee on Thursday would increase the undergraduate tuition for non-Californians to nearly $37,000 in the fall. Non-residents are currently charged a $22,878 premium on top of the $12,804 in tuition and fees Californians pay.
The increase resulted from a budget compromise between Gov. Jerry Brown and UC President Janet Napolitano that also would freeze in-state tuition for undergraduates and graduate students in academic disciplines.
The deal still needs to be approved by the California Legislature, where Democratic leaders have been pressuring Napolitano to prioritize California residents in admission decisions over higher-paying non-residents.
