Traffic backed up on Kalanianaole Highway near Keolu Drive Thursday afternoon.
Crews completed repairs on a sinkhole that opened on Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo and reopened the road by about 4:30 a.m. Friday.
The sinkhole, about 3- to 4-foot deep by 4- to 5-foot wide, at Kalanianaole Highway and Mekia Street was discovered by a passing motorist who called 911 Thursday afternoon, a state Highways Division worker said.
There is a bigger, hollow cavity under the pavement, the worker said.
A Department of Transportation road crew worked on it Thursday night after a city crew did diagnostic testing. Police closed a portion of the highway and rerouted traffic, causing a huge backup during rush-hour traffic.
