Ex-soldier is held in telephone threat
Police arrested a former Schofield Barracks soldier Thursday afternoon in Wahiawa following a telephone threat that prompted officials to close two schools on base and conduct a five-hour search for the suspect.
Honolulu police arrested the man, 24, at about 3:15 p.m. behind Mendonca Park.
The Army said it received a telephone threat at 10:18 a.m. Thursday. The threat was related to a domestic dispute between the man, who was involuntarily discharged from the Army in June 2011, and his girlfriend, a Schofield Barracks soldier, the Army said.
Army law enforcement personnel searched the base for the man.
Officials locked down Solomon and Hale Kula elementary schools, which are on base, from 11 a.m. The lockdown was lifted at about the time school let out for the day. There was no specific threat to the schools, and the lockdown was a precaution, the Army said.
Mammoth waves forecast to arrive tonight
Waves reaching up to 20 feet in height are expected on the north shores of most islands by tonight, National Weather Service forecasters predict.
A high-surf advisory will go into effect for the north shores of all islands except Lanai and Kahoolawe starting at noon today until 6 p.m. Saturday. The advisory also extends to the west shores of Oahu, Kauai, Niihau, Molokai and Hawaii island.
A northwest swell is expected to arrive this afternoon.
Forecasters say waves will build to 10 to 15 feet on north shores today, then 15 to 20 feet tonight.
On the west side, forecasters expect waves with faces of 6 to 12 feet this afternoon, increasing to 8 to 14 feet tonight. West shores on Hawaii island might see 4- to 6-foot surf in the afternoon and 6- to 8-foot surf tonight.
The National Weather Service warns that the high surf will produce hazardous rip currents and rough ocean conditions.
