‘Bones’ keeps title with unanimous decision
BALTIMORE >> Jon Jones punished Glover Teixeira for five rounds and won a unanimous decision Saturday night at UFC 172, successfully defending his light heavyweight championship for the seventh straight time.
Jones (20-1) won 50-45 on all three scorecards and rolled to his 11th straight victory, the longest streak among active UFC fighters.
Jones had the Baltimore crowd roaring when he opened his pre-fight walk with the “squirrel” dance Ray Lewis made famous. The former Baltimore Ravens linebacker had a cageside seat and stood several times to root on Jones. Chandler Jones and Arthur Jones, his NFL-playing brothers, also attended and sat near Lewis. Arthur Jones, who plays for the Colts, was a Super Bowl champion with Lewis and the Ravens.
In the opening fight on pay-per-view, Waianae’s Max Holloway scored a submission victory over Andre Fili at 3:39 of the third round.
Holloway (9-3, 5-3 UFC) hit Fili (13-2, 1-1) with a series of shots standing before transitioning from a takedown immediately into a guillotine choke, forcing Fili to tap.
“I felt like he was up on the cards and I needed a finish in that third round,” Holloway said.
Makaha’s Yancy Medeiros lost to Jim Miller in the next fight by guillotine choke at 3:18 of the first round.
Medeiros (9-2, 0-2) was caught with a left to the body and was choked unconscious, forcing the referee to stop the fight without Medeiros tapping.
Miller (24-4, 13-3) tied the UFC record for most wins at 155 pounds with his 13th.
