Moanalua graduate John Oda will represent the U.S. at the 120th British Amateur Championship, June 15-20 at Carnoustie Golf Links and Panmure Golf Club, in Scotland.
Oda just finished his freshman year at UNLV and was named to the Ping All-West Region team last weekend by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was also the Mountain West Freshman of the Year and led the Rebels in scoring average (71.11), helping them make their 19th NCAA Championship appearance.
Oda, a two-time Hawaii state amateur and high school champion, won the 2015 Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass his freshman season. Last summer, he advanced to quarterfinals of the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
Northwestern’s Kacie Komoto and Washington’s Eimi Koga and Cyd Okino represented Hawaii at the women’s NCAA Championship. Komoto finished 29th individually while Koga was 38th and Okino 51st.
The Huskies were eighth in the team competition and earned the final spot in the new match-play format. They lost to top-seeded USC in the first round.
UCLA, with ‘Iolani alum Lorens Chan, earned the eighth seed in the men’s event — by one stroke — but fell to top-seeded Illinois in match play Tuesday. Chan tied for 54th in the individual competition, with San Diego State freshman PJ Samiere, a Punahou graduate.
