Mower spark causes 1 of 2 brush fires on Garden Isle
Kauai firefighters battled separate brush fires in Hanamaulu and Anahola on Tuesday.
The first fire occurred at about 4 p.m. on the makai side of Kuhio Highway in Hanamaulu. A man was mowing a pasture when the tractor mower became entangled in barbed wire, causing a spark that started the fire, according to a news release from the Kauai Fire Department.
The fire department said the man, who was not injured, remained at the site to assist firefighters by clearing a firebreak.
A portion of Kapule Highway was temporarily closed while firefighters battled the 70-acre blaze.
Firefighters on Air 1 as well as two private helicopters conducted water drops until nightfall. The brush fire was under control at 7 p.m. and extinguished at 8:30 p.m.
At 9 p.m., firefighters responded to the Anahola brush fire on the mauka side of Kuhio Highway, south of the solar farm.
The department said the 1-acre brush fire occurred in an area that’s used as a dumping ground. Old tires, garbage bags and other items had been disposed of at the site.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze within an hour but they returned at noon Wednesday with Air 1 and a water tender to battle hot spots.
The flare-ups were under control at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Anyone with information on the Anahola fire is asked to call the Kauai Fire Department at 241-1711.
