Today is the last day to buy permits to set off firecrackers on Oahu on New Year’s Eve.
The permits, which will be available until 4:30 p.m. at satellite city halls around the island, are required to buy firecrackers from licensed retailers.
Under the city’s fireworks ordinance, the sale of permits isn’t allowed within 10 days of when they can be used, making today the last day they will be available to New Year’s revelers because satellite city halls are closed on Saturdays. The permits are no longer issued at Oahu fire stations.
Permits are $25 each, allowing the purchase of up to 5,000 firecrackers. There is no limit on the number of permits an individual can buy, but the permits and firecrackers can be sold only to someone 18 or older.
Firecrackers can be purchased only from 12:01 a.m. on Thursday to midnight on Dec. 31.
The use of other types of fireworks, including paperless firecrackers, fountains and sparklers, is banned on Oahu.
Firecrackers can be set off only during a four-hour period from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.
The city sold 8,564 permits in 2012. As of Monday, 3,205 permits had been issued, city officials said.

CLARIFICATION
The original story said that firecracker permits would be available at satellite city hall offices on Oahu until 4:30 p.m. today. Most satellite city hall offices close at 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, the mayor’s office has extended the hours of these offices until 4:30 p.m. today to accommodate those seeking permits. |
