HPU teams advance in D-II tennis

The Hawaii Pacific men’s and women’s tennis teams breezed into the quarterfinals at at the NCAA Division II Championships at Surprise, Ariz., on Wednesday.

The fifth-ranked HPU men beat West Virginia Wesleyan 5-0 and the fourth-ranked women beat New York Institute of Technology 6-0.

Third-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii played Northeastern State on Wednesday.

Max Hertl won in singles and doubles for the Sea Warriors, who play top-ranked Barry today.

Celina Goetti, Karen Ramirez and Magdalena Smejovawon won in singles and doubles for the Sea Warriors, who play No. 29 Southwest Baptist today.

Yamauchi takes fifth in NCAA D-II golf

Hawaii Hilo’s Dalen Yamauchi finished fifth and the Vulcans finished sixth at the NCAA Division II South CentralWest Golf Regional in DuPont, Wash., on Wednesday.

Yamauchi, a Waiakea graduate who entered the day tied for second, shot a 2-over 74 to finish at 5-under 211. Western Washington’s Kyle Schrader, who started the day in sixth, shot 6-under 66 (10-under 206) to rally and win by two shots over Kevin Witte of University of Colorado Colorado Springs (72—208).

Cal State Monterey Bay won by a shot over Western Washington, 10-under 854 to 9-under 855. UHH finished at even-par 864.

James Hall was the next highest finisher for the Vulcans, tying for 31st at 69—218. Chris Shimomura shot 73—220 (t44); Corey Kozuma 71—222 (t61) and Kyeton Littel 75—226 (t78).

Akron completes Diamond Head field

Akron of the Mid-American Conference is the final team in the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic field, HADHC executive director David Matlin said on Wednesday.

The Zips join a field that includes host Hawaii, Boise State, George Mason, Iowa State, Oregon State, Saint Mary’s and South Carolina. Four of those teams — Akron, BSU, ISU and SMC — participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Zips went 26-7 and won the MAC title to get there.

The DHC will again be played on Dec. 22, 23 and 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

"We are very excited to be in an ESPN-owned tournament for a second-consecutive season," Akron coach Keith Dambrot stated. "The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is a great tournament and once again consists of a very strong field.
