Akron completes Diamond Head field
Akron of the Mid-American Conference is the final team in the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic field, HADHC executive director David Matlin said on Wednesday.
The Zips join a field that includes host Hawaii, Boise State, George Mason, Iowa State, Oregon State, Saint Mary’s and South Carolina. Four of those teams — Akron, BSU, ISU and SMC — participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Zips went 26-7 and won the MAC title to get there.
The DHC will again be played on Dec. 22, 23 and 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
"We are very excited to be in an ESPN-owned tournament for a second-consecutive season," Akron coach Keith Dambrot stated. "The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is a great tournament and once again consists of a very strong field. Like the Puerto Rico Tip-Off last season, playing in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic will allow our fans to travel to a beautiful location and see the Zips play against high-quality competition."
