No attempted murder charge in stabbing
The city prosecutor’s office says there is insufficient evidence to support an attempted murder charge against a Kalihi man arrested in a stabbing case Sunday in Aiea.
Officers arrested the 25-year-old man, who allegedly stabbed another man during an argument, early Sunday morning.
Police said the incident occurred at 3:30 a.m. A 19-year-old man was taken to the hospital with stab wounds.
The man arrested has been released.
Copper cable stolen at Moanalua Gardens
Copper thieves took about 50 feet of Hawaiian Telcom’s copper cable in an underground manhole in the Moanalua Gardens area sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Thieves broke through a manhole welded shut to prevent copper theft, and sawed through two cables. The severed cables disrupted some services. Telephone and Internet service to more than 600 Hawaiian Telcom customers may have been affected, according to a news release issued by the company.
The incident marks the fourth time thieves have stolen copper cable at Moanalua Gardens, despite theft-prevention measures.
Hawaiian Telcom crews are now working to replace the stolen cables by splicing a 1,200-pair section and a 600-pair section in the manhole. This work is scheduled to be completed by the end of this week.
Stealing copper wire weighing a pound or more is a class C felony in Hawaii.
Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida Fry said the number of copper thefts affecting the company total about 20 a year.
The company is asking the public to call 911 to report suspicious activity to police or to Hawaiian Telcom security at 643-7111.
Cause of Enchanted Lake fire unknown
Fire investigators were unable to determine the cause of a recent house fire in the Enchanted Lake area.
The April 8 fire started on a patio at the back of the house. Investigators could not determine a cause, however, because of the extensive damage, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman David Jenkins.
The fire displaced two men and six dogs living at the rented home at 401 Keolu Drive.
The two men were injured, and were taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Two other men who assisted the renters as they tried to douse flames with hoses were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Damage to the house, its contents and vehicles was estimated at $600,000.
