The multimillion-dollar CabaRAE showroom at the base of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Tower has been completed — and it belies its Waikiki setting.
The 10,000-square-foot space is to be the permanent home for the CabaRAE show, which had its soft opening on Halloween night following a seven-week sneak peek in the Tapa Ballroom over the summer.
There is nothing like it.
As some 5,000 audience members already have experienced, it is circus-meets-lounge-act-meets-Cirque-like-aerialist extravaganza, and hula-hooping Guinness World Record holder Craig Reid "brings the house down at the end of the show," said Dave Renzella, executive producer.
It may help to know that Reid dresses in an Elvis Presley-style jumpsuit.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s John Berger wrote a detailed and positive review of the "big and new and different" Waikiki showroom experience in July.
The show has some PG-13-rated elements, but producers say families including small children have come to the show and not only had zero complaints, but even posed for pictures with cast members some might consider to be scantily clad, Renzella said.
The show is open, running Wednesday through Sunday evenings and offering attendees an "after-party" experience to take pictures and talk story with the cast members.
Further, the showroom opens to the public as a no-cover-charge lounge from after the show until 2 a.m., said Renzella, a principal of San Diego-based RMD Group. The company owns FLUXX nightclub in San Diego and serves as a bar and nightclub industry consultant.

HL Entertainment is a lead investor in CabaRAE and also serves in an executive producer capacity, according to publicity materials.
The showroom is based on the design of the old "spiegeltent" of the 1800s. "Spiegeltent" is Dutch for a style of large traveling tent made with wood and canvas and decorated with mirrored columns and other elements, explained Alan Goldberg, creative producer of CabaRAE.
This layout is sort of like circus-in-the-round, putting the audience right amid the performers with its central stage, with a piano stage and oval stage on either side of audience seating.
Wanda Azzario Goldberg, Alan’s British wife and the show’s artistic director, as well as one of the Skating Willers, created the design concept years ago.
A San Diego-based design firm hired by Renzella’s RMD Group brought the rendering to life, adding some of its own touches.
The show has been a dream of the Goldbergs for years. The Goldbergs connected with Renzella in late 2012 and now are finally seeing their dream come true.
Audiences gather for pre-show beverages outside, and once the doors open, attendees will be led past a large, black-and-white collage of Alan’s and Wanda’s performances in earlier years.
Both joined the circus life as adults and traveled the world. They met along the way but were married to others. They reconnected years later via Facebook and later married at Three Tables, on Oahu’s North Shore. Goldberg has lived in the islands for 10 years and, for a time, ran fishing and scuba tours out of Kewalo Basin.
The production employs a rotating cast of about 15 performers from around the world, as many as 25 cocktail staff including bartenders and servers, and a half-dozen technical crew members, Renzella said.
Given RMD’s nightclub and bar experience, CabaRAE offers bottle service, in addition to traditional bar service, during and after the show.
Because Waikiki never shuts down, CabaRAE will be open during all upcoming holidays.
