A strong earthquake has struck off Costa Rica but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said today.

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6, was centered 92 miles west of San Jose, Costa Rica, and hit at about 6:45 p.m. (2:45 p.m. in Hawaii), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was about 12 miles deep.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said that while no widespread tsunami threat exists, earthquakes of this size can sometimes generate local tsunamis along coasts near the epicenter.
