BYU-Hawaii advances to regional championship in volleyball
Junior All-American hitter Shih Ting “Stella” Chen put down 16 kills to lead second-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 sweep of third-seeded UC San Diego in a NCAA II West Regional volleyball semifinal Friday in San Bernadino, Calif.
The fourth-ranked Seasiders (26-1) advance to play the winner of Friday’s second semifinal between Sonoma State and host Cal State San Bernardino. Saturday’s title match at The Den is scheduled for 5 p.m. Hawaii time.
Junior middle Erh Fang “Ariel” Hsu added nine kills and freshman hitter Noel Pauga added eight.
Set 1 was the tightest with the teams trading leads late. At 24-23 Pauga’s kill won it for the Seasiders.
It was the 19th consecutive win for the Seasiders, who were outblocked by the Tritons (26-6). BYUH had 65 digs, with four players in double digits, led by junior setter Ying Chun “Michelle” Chen’s 14.
The winner of Saturday’s match moves on to the NCAA DII elite eight in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dec. 12-14.
