Cane fire causes $25,000 in crop damage
WAILUKU >> Fire officials say an unauthorized cane fire in Paia has burned five acres, causing losses for Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. estimated at $25,000.
The Maui News says firefighters were called to the scene about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga says when crews arrived, they found about 2 acres of cane on fire.
Firefighters used hoses on reels that can be charged with water while being pulled for quick attack of the fire.
There were no reported injuries.
Mainaga says the cause of the fire has not been determined.
