It’s a relief to hear that the state and an immigrant advocacy group have reached a settlement to make driver’s licensing exams available in non-English versions for at least the next five years.
Multilingual tests were administered up until 2008, when they were yanked after the Legislature required a new question to be added.
The group Faith Action for Community Equity sued, citing discrimination; there also was talk about millions of federal transportation dollars possibly being at risk.
While the state did reinstate the driver’s licensing tests in 12 non-English languages last year, the just-reached settlement secures assurances for the long term.
Senate presidents gravitate to HART
Once out of office, where do former state Senate presidents go to reclaim some political spotlight?
Why, to the rail project’s board of directors, naturally.
Colleen Hanabusa was just named to the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s board, to complete a vacancy through June 2016; she was Senate president from 2007-09.
Already on HART’s board is Robert Bunda, who led the Senate from 2001-06. Bunda, though, will resign from HART effective June 30, well ahead of his 2018 term expiration, citing more time with family.
Let’s see who fills Bunda’s slot.
Donna Mercado Kim and Shan Tsutsui remain in elective office, but the way things are going, Norman Mizuguchi might be in line.
