Kapolei has been here before; Moanalua has not.
The Hurricanes showed off a stifling defense and Kapolei beat Na Menehune 9-3 in the first round of the Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championships on Tuesday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Kapolei has been in every tournament since 2004. Moanalua is making its first appearance.
"Once it starts, all of the little details that make it professional can make it overwhelming if you are not used to it," Kapolei coach Dexter Lee said. "I think it definitely helps to have been here before."

Kapolei outscored Moanalua 28-6 in two wins during the season, but Na Menehune put those in the past. Moanalua stifled Kapolei’s offense in the early going, stealing the ball the first four times down the pool and forcing the Hurricanes to take a timeout after 31⁄2 minutes.
"My girls were sleeping," Lee said. "They came out sleeping with bad passing and we had to stop that. If we do that against Baldwin, they are going to jump all over us."
The pep talk worked. The Hurricanes scored on their next possession after the break, when Doran Bosque beat the Moanalua keeper with a nifty backhand goal. Kayla Lanier followed that by picking the keeper’s pocket on Kapolei’s next possession and depositing it into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Kapolei’s starters played the first quarter and a half. Leilani Herrera scored with 6:37 left in the second quarter and Lanier turned another steal into a score a minute later. Senior defender Ashley Fuerst scored from the point with 5:18 left in the second quarter before Lee ordered her and another starter out of the pool. Only Bosque played the entire game, contributing two goals in the first half. Lanier matched her with two, the only Hurricanes to double up.
"I really think we played down this game," Bosque said. "I think we can do a lot better than that. After the first quarter, we picked it up a little bit."
Kapolei’s defense made all of its offensive struggles moot. The Hurricanes rebuffed Na Menehune on their first 13 trips to Kapolei’s end, and Moanalua only scored once on 17 possessions in the first half.
Erin Voss led Moanalua, which outscored Kapolei 2-1 in the final quarter, with two goals, and Jessica Gilbert added another.
"I’m proud that we are even here," Moanalua coach Mark Mikami said. "The way we played just now, regardless of the score, I thought we played great. This has been a three-year process for us and we are just happy to be here."
