Witnesses told police they saw a murder suspect who was holding at least one knife hit a homeless man and say, "Let him die" at a Nimitz Highway homeless encampment Sunday.
Herwin Magbulos, 24, of Kalihi-Palama is charged with second-degree murder. Police said he fatally stabbed Darryl Wong, 59, multiple times during an argument at the encampment near Kilihau and Mapunapuna streets. The incident happened at about 6:12 a.m. Sunday.
Magbulos made his first appearance in District Court Tuesday. Bail was set at $150,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
In a police affidavit filed with District Court Tuesday, one man said he saw Magbulos hit Wong in the chest. When Wong stood up, the witness said, Wong had stab wounds through the front and back of his shirt, and Magbulos had a knife in his hand.
Another homeless man, who was visiting Wong under the Nimitz Highway viaduct, told police he saw Magbulos holding two knives, 10 and 6 inches long.
He said Magbulos looked at Wong and said, "Let him die."
A third homeless man, who was sleeping in a tent under the viaduct, said his girlfriend woke him, saying people were fighting. He said he went to Wong’s tent, where the yelling was coming from, and saw Magbulos leave the tent with two knives in his hands.
He also told police he heard Magbulos say, "Let him die," the police affidavit said.
Police found Magbulos at 1:30 p.m., sitting in front of the Barcelona Laundromat on Factory Street.
"You looking for me?" he asked the approaching officers, who arrested him. the court documents say.
No knives were found on him.
