Sporting the nation’s longest road losing streak, the University of Hawaii knew breaking it today at Colorado State would be difficult.

And the Rams showed why early and often en route to a 49-22 victory in a Mountain West Conference football game played at Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins, Colo. The loss was the 17th straight on the road for the Warriors who fell to 2-8 for the season and 1-4 in league action.

Colorado State raised its season record to 9-1 and 5-1 in the MWC. The Rams are fighting Boise State and Utah State for the West Division title. Senior quarterback Garrett Garrison completed 13 of 24 passes for 278 yards and four touchdowns for a rating of 206.5.

Running back Dee Hart rushed for 115 yards on 11 carries and one score. Counterpart Treyous Jarrells scored twice as he rushed for 69 yards on 12 attempts as the Rams led from start to finish against an overmatched UH squad.

Missing top wideout Rashard Lewis due to injury, his teammates stepped up big-time. Charles Lovett caught four passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. Xavier Williams, Elroy Williams and tight end Steven Walker also caught touchdown passes for the Rams.

Already up by 20 at the half, CSU forced a fumble on the opening offensive series of the third quarter for Hawaii. Warriors quarterback Ikaika Woolsey passed to Harold Moleni down the middle for a 3-yard gain, but the tight end was stripped of the football and Colorado State’s Kevin Pierre-Louis recovered the fumble at the UH 19.

Grayson wasted little time putting the game out of reach with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Williams as Jared Roberts hit the extra point to make it 35-8 CSU with 14:01 left in the third quarter. It was Williams’ fourth scoring pass of the game.

Hawaii was much more successful on its second series of the second half, going 75 yards on seven plays for the score. The big one: Woolsey hit wideout Ammon Barker for a 41-yard gain on a third-and-11 play. It set up a first-and10 at the Rams 13 after UH running back Joey Iosefa converted a big third-down snap of his own.

Woolsey hit Scott Harding for a crucial gain of 8 yards that set up first-and-goal at the 3 for the Warriors. Two plays later, Iosefa scored from 2 yards out as Tyler Hadden converted the PAT to cut the Rams’ margin to 35-15 with 8:56 left in the third quarter.

Colorado State wasted little time getting back on Hawaii’s end of the field. Grayson found Lovett for a huge 71-yard gain that set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Hart, his second score of the afternoon as Roberts hit the PAT to extend the CSU margin to 41-15 with 6:39 left in the third.

Hawaii came back with another nice drive with Woolsey in sync with his receivers, including a 17-yard scoring strike to Harding. Hadden hit the PAT to make it 42-22 with 4:01 left in the third quarter. It was the second consecutive 75-yard scoring drive for the Warriors, a rare commodity, these days.

Not to be outdone, the Rams strapped on their offensive helmets and just gashed the gassed UH defense for huge chunks of yardage setting up a first-and-goal from the 2. From there, Jarrells took it in from a yard out for his second score of the game. Roberts made the PAT to extend CSU’s advantage to 49-22 with 14:56 left in the fourth quarter. The drive was 75 yards on 10 plays.

The Hawaii offense, thanks to a 38-yard gain by Woolsey, got back to the CSU, but he was picked off by CSU safety Martavius Foster on a failed screen pass to end that threat at the Rams 34. It was the second turnover for Woolsey, who was also the victim of seven dropped passes.

CSU put in the back-ups on offense, but against a dead tired UH defense, these guys looked like first-stringers, before Roberts missed a 27-yard field goal wide left with a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Rams took the opening kickoff of the game and marched a methodical 80 yards to score first in the cool, thin Rocky Mountain air.

Grayson mixed ground with air to give the Rams the early lead. He threw an 8-yard touchdown pass on a big third-down play to Masters as Roberts added the PAT to make it 7-0 CSU with 12 minutes left in the first quarter. Hart had a 43-yard jaunt on the opening drive to set up the score.

Hawaii’s first offensive series had some success but stalled in CSU territory. Harding used his rugby-style punt to back the Rams up at their own 2 with a wonderful kick and coverage. It led to Grayson missing a play-action handoff as the ball came loose in the end zone. Grayson snagged it, but was covered up by the UH defense for the first safety of the season for UH to make it 7-2 with 8:19 left in the first.

The Warriors’ second series produced only one first down, but once again, Harding pinned the Rams deep, this time at their own 1-yard line. The defense held, and Harding returned the punt to the CSU 30, giving Hawaii excellent field position.

Hawaii came out in the wildcat formation for Iosefa, back for the first time in seven games following injury and suspension for a DUI. But the Rams held, setting up a 41-yard field goal by Hadden to make it 7-5 with 3:58 left in the first quarter.

CSU struck quickly on its next series, going 65 yards on only four plays. The big one was the last one as Grayson hit a wide open Lovett for a 53-yard touchdown pass as Roberts added the PAT to make it 14-5 with 2:31 left in the opening period.

Hawaii’s next offensive series was a woeful three-and-out as the receivers dropped four passes in the opening quarter alone. The powerful Rams offense began its next drive at its own 26 and quickly moved into UH territory on only two plays en route to 184 offensive yards in the first quarter.

Grayson produced most of it as the Rams extended their advantage on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Grayson to Walker as Roberts made the PAT to make it 21-5 CSU with 14:55 left in the second quarter.

The CSU defensed forced a quick three-and-out, but a Harding end-over-end punt was muffed by Hart and Hawaii recovered at the CSU 46. It was the seventh time this year UH has recovered a fumbled punt.

The Warriors quickly moved into CSU territory as Harding caught a 10-yard pass to make it first-and-10 at the Rams 23. Two plays later, UH needed 5 for a first down, but got none on a missed pass play by Woolsey. Hadden hit a 36-yard field goal to cut the margin to 21-8 with 10:11 remaining in the second quarter.

The Rams put together another solid drive that resulted in more points for CSU. Grayson showed why he’s among the best quarterbacks in the country as he threw with precision to set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Jarrells as Roberts converted the PAT to make it 28-8 CSU with 4:28 left in the half.

On the ensuing offensive series for UH, the Rams forced a pick of Woolsey by Tyree Simmons and set up shop at its own 47. Facing third-and-11, Grayson couldn’t find anyone as UH forced the punt and the half ended.
