An Armed Forces Classic basketball doubleheader will originate from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in 2016, ESPN announced on Wednesday.
The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors stand ready to participate, should an offer arrive, UH coach Gib Arnold said.
The series of marquee Division I men’s basketball games over the Veterans Day week are being played on U.S. military bases worldwide on a five-year rotational basis and televised by the network.
“We would definitely be interested in something like that,” Arnold said. “I’ve heard a little bit of those rumblings, but nothing official. Yeah, I’ve heard about that.”
Arnold said participation in that event would not preclude UH from participating in the Rainbow Classic
or Diamond Head Classic tournaments.
In this year’s game, 19th-ranked Oregon defeated Georgetown 82-75 at the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, last month.
Teams for the Nov. 11, 2016, event will be announced later, ESPN said.
The Nov. 14, 2014, game will be at U.S. Air Station Borinquen in Puerto Rico and will feature Louisville vs. Minnesota while the Nov. 13, 2015, event will be played at a yet-to-be-determined U.S. Marine Corps base.
