Routine screening of checked baggage at Honolulu Airport this month turned up two 1-pound cans of rifle gunpowder, which were confiscated, the Transportation Security Administration said.
The TSA said the gunpowder was discovered May 8 in a bag bound for a United Airlines flight to Chicago. The passenger who checked in the bag was not arrested or detained.
Also, the FBI held a passenger at Hilo Airport for questioning when he tried to check in luggage containing what appeared to be a modified pressure cooker.
The item was found May 8 during a security screening. The man was not arrested and no explosives were found.
The find occurred after two bombs made from pressure cookers killed three people and injured more than 260 at the Boston Marathon on April 15.
The gunpowder was listed in a TSA report of confiscated items for the week ending May 10. The report said no firearms were found at Honolulu Airport in that period, but that 50 guns were found at airports nationwide, and that 45 of those guns were loaded.
Five knives have been confiscated at island airports so far this year by the TSA.
Since Jan. 20, the TSA reported finding the knives concealed in items such as a hairbrush, a toothbrush holder and a thermos. In each case the passengers lost their knives but were allowed to fly.
