A popular former speech teacher and debate coach at Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama campus allegedly recorded students showering in his faculty housing apartment near the campus while staying overnight there to prepare for debate tournaments.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging Gabriel Alisna with five counts of violation of privacy and two counts of misdemeanor sexual assault.
"He secretly set up a video camera and recorded multiple students showering in his residence without their knowledge or consent," Deputy Prosecutor Kristen Yamamoto told a state judge Wednesday.
Circuit Judge Richard Perkins issued a bench warrant for Alisna’s arrest and set his bail at $75,000.
Yamamoto said the charges involve three victims in 2012 and 2013.
The sexual assault charge involves the fondling of one student, she said.
The privacy violation is a class C felony that carries a maximum prison term of five years. The grand jury, however, found Alisna eligible for extended sentencing, which would allow a judge to double the penalty if Alisna is convicted.
Kamehameha Schools spokeswoman Marsha Bolson said Alisna was terminated in March, when the school announced it had turned the matter over to police.
Attorney Michael Green represents two of the three students; others who claim they, too, were victimized by Alisna; and their parents.
Green says he is trying to get a mediated civil settlement between the school and his clients.
