Lahaina beaches reopened following sewage spill
Beaches in Lahaina from Mala Wharf to Canoe Beach were reopened this morning after being closed for a day because of a sewer line break, Maui County officials said.
Maui Department of Environmental Management on Tuesday reported that a contractor broke a 20-inch sewer force main around 2 p.m. at a Wahikuli construction site. The break forced the Lahaina 3 pump station to be shut down for repairs which affected all Lahaina residents from Puamana to the Lahaina Civic Center. Repairs were completed at 7:30 p.m.
No sewage spills were reported reaching the ocean, but beaches in Lahaina were closed as a precaution.
