Police officers around the state are beginning the annual Click It or Ticket campaign, stepping up citations of drivers who do not buckle themselves up or their passengers.

During last year’s campaign, police issued 1,905 tickets for seat belt violations and 105 tickets for child safety seat restraint infractions.

Under a law that went into effect on May 20, 2013, the driver is responsible for his or her passengers and will be cited if any passenger is not using a seat belt, car seat, or booster seat.

The fine for seat-belt violations is $92 — and $100 to $500 for not buckling up a child.

Hawaii’s seat belt usage rate was about 93 percent last year, among the highest in the nation.
