Waipahu fire is believed to be intentional
Police have started an arson investigation into the $40,000 fire that destroyed a one-bedroom townhouse in Waipahu on Wednesday night.
Fire investigators believe the fire was "intentionally set." Residents in the eight-unit, two-story complex were able to bring the blaze under control using garden hoses and portable fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived at 10:21 p.m. Wednesday.
The Royal Kunia Gardens townhouse complex had to be evacuated for a second time Thursday morning when firefighters returned to the scene to extinguish hot spots.
Pedestrian hit by car was Kaneohe man
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office has identified the 89-year-old man who died from injuries suffered when he was struck by a car Thursday while crossing Kaneohe Bay Drive as Lawrence Vieira of Kaneohe.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.
Police said a 68-year-old Kailua man driving a white 2009 Volvo sedan struck Vieira, who was in a marked crosswalk. The driver was heading west on Kaneohe Bay Drive near Castle High School.
Paramedics took Vieira in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died.
Body found near Magic Island is identified
The 66-year-old Honolulu man whose body was found in the ocean near Magic Island on Tuesday has been identified as Ung Nam Ha, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday.
The cause of death has been withheld, pending the results of further tests.
Ha was found floating face down just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Police have classified the incident as an unattended death, and no foul play is suspected.
