Honolulu workers earn more than the national average

The average Honolulu-area worker earned $22.24 an hour in May 2012, about 1 percent higher than the national average of $22.01 an hour, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Those in the legal profession were the highest paid at $43.11 an hour, with management occupations close behind at $43.06 an hour.

Honolulu is the top-paying U.S. metropolitan area for hotel, motel and resort desk clerks, at an average of $18.82 an hour, as well as for automotive and watercraft service attendants, averaging $15.38 an hour.

The foodservice industry comprises 11.2 percent of the local workforce, compared to 8.9 percent nationally, while office and administrative support jobs make up the largest share of local employment, at 15.4 percent, according to the BLS report.
