Kailua house fire viewed as arson; suspect sought
Police were looking Saturday for a man in his 20s who is suspected of setting fire to a vacant Kailua house Friday night.
Police said the fire began at about 10:28 p.m. when someone used an unknown accelerant to set fire to a house in the Enchanted Lake neighborhood. Police have opened a first-degree arson case.
The fire investigator estimated damage to the property at $54,000.
Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the house, at 1040 Kupau St., had recently been refurbished for sale. He said one wall was damaged in an explosion from gas buildup, but the fire was immediately extinguished.
Lum said witnesses reported seeing someone leave the scene.
