President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, dined with friends at Alan Wong’s restaurant Monday night after the family went on a two-hour hike on Makiki Valley Loop Trail. Earlier, the president went for a morning round of golf with friends at the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club in Maunawili.
The Obamas arrived at the restaurant just after 8 p.m. without their daughters, Sasha and Malia, who stayed at their Kailua vacation rental.
As per his custom, the president began the day with a workout before dawn at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii gym. Obama arrived at the gym at about 6:50 a.m. and he returned to his vacation home at about 7:47 a.m.
Before golfing, White House officials said Obama was briefed on back-to-back deadly attacks in Russia as the country prepares to host the Winter Olympics in February. At least 31 people were killed in the separate explosions at a railway station and on a bus in Volgograd, about 400 miles away from the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
A White House spokeswoman said the United States would welcome "closer cooperation" with Russia on security preparations for the games.
Obama started his morning round just after 9 a.m., dressed in a white shirt and baseball cap.
His golf partners were Hawaii friends Bobby Titcomb and Mike Ramos; Chicago friends Marty Nesbitt and Dr. Eric Whitaker; aide Marvin Nicholson; White House chef Sam Kass; and newcomer Andrew Dibble, who is apparently another friend from Chicago.
The group played for about five hours before returning to the Kailua residence at about 2:35 p.m.
The golf round was the sixth such outing for the president on this vacation. He teed off Sunday at the Kaneohe Klipper course on the nearby Marine base. He’s also played at the Mid-Pacific Country Club and the Koolau Golf Course.
Obama had golfed before at the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club in 2011 and in 2009,.
The first family and friends started the 2.5-mile Makiki hike at about 3:38 p.m., after the president returned from the golf outing. They left the trail at 5:37 p.m., arriving back in Kailua at 6:05.
