One of the most highly anticipated films hitting theaters this summer is the action blockbuster "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Not really sure what it’s all about (well, except that there’s a raccoon)? Familiarize yourself with a free copy of the Marvel comic that the movie’s based on during Free Comic Book Day on May 3.
Four comic book shops and 12 public libraries on Oahu are participating in the nationwide event, which started in 2002 and is held on the first Saturday in May as a way to expose more people to the world of graphic novels.
Robert Lai, owner of Collector Maniacs on Waialae Avenue, says Free Comic Book Day is a great chance "to give people a chance to try out something without any charge or obligation."
While there are dozens of titles that are part of this year’s giveaway, not every one will be available at every participating store. The limit of free comics per person also varies by store.
Charles Whitesell, owner of Other Realms LTD in Ward Warehouse, said his store will have more than 500 comic books to give away, with a limit of three different issues per person. Among the more well-known titles he’s ordered for the store are "Archie Digest," "Avatar," "Transformers vs. GI Joe," "SpongeBob," "Sonic the Hedgehog," "DC The Future’s End" (which includes Batman) and "Guardians of the Galaxy."
"Archie," "Transformers" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" also will be among the 500 comics available at Collector Maniacs, said Lai. He’s also brought in "Bongo Free-for-All" (which features the Simpsons), "Rise of the Magi" and "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers."
Also participating in Free Comic Book Day are Westside Comics and Games in Kapolei, Gecko Books & Comics in Kaimuki and select libraries statewide.
Costumed characters from the Pacific Outpost of the 501st Imperial Legion, Rebel Legion Hawaii and Costumers Guild of Hawaii will appear at some libraries. Visit www.librarieshawaii.org or call the hosting libraries for appearance times and more information.
