McLachlin wins at Stonecreek
Hawaii pro Parker McLachlin shot a course-record 62 in the first round of the Pepsi Tour event last week and went on to win at Stonecreek Golf Club in Phoenix.
McLachlin, who won once in a four-year PGA Tour career, fired 69 in the second round to win by eight shots. He collected $1,600.
The Pepsi Tour is in its 21st year hosting golf tournaments on the West Coast.
U.S. Open qualifier begins Monday
A field of 36 professional and amateur golfers from Hawaii and two from the mainland will compete Monday in a U.S. Open local qualifier at Waialae Country Club.
The top two advance to one of 13 sectional qualifiers. The field includes David Fink, Nick Mason, Kevin Hayashi and Kyle Suppa.
Sectional qualifiers join exempt players at the 2015 U.S. Open Championship, June 18-20 at Chambers Bay in Washington.
Yamauchi advances in NCAA tournament
University of Hawaii-Hilo senior Dalen Yamauchi did his part Wednesday, finishing 19th overall and first among golfers playing as individuals at the NCAA Division II West and Southwest Regional, in Vallejo, Calif.
Yamauchi, a Waiakea graduate, closed with 76 for a 226 total. He advances to the NCAA D-II Championship, May 18-22, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.
Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Nicolas Herrera (79–230) tied for 35th and Hilo’s Kyeton Little (77–240) was 76th. All three golfers got into the tournament as individuals.
Kamehameha graduate Donny Hopoi (83–240), a freshman at Dixie State, also tied for 78th. His team finished 18th.
